The Gilroy Cannery Project Description

The Gilroy Cannery Project is the redevelopment of the vacant Gilroy cannery site in downtown Gilroy, Santa Clara County.  Anyone who grew up in Gilroy remembers the cannery as the pulse of downtown. When the harvest was in full swing, the downtown vibrated with the comings and goings of the workers.  Now, the cannery property is a 12-acre gap in the core of the historic business district.  South County Housing Corporation has been working with the community for two years to design the redevelopment of this key property to provide affordable housing and a valuable asset for the downtown business and residential neighborhoods, and to celebrate Gilroy’s rich agricultural history.

This novel infill development will contain 210 units of mixed-income for-sale housing and 40,000 square feet of office space.  The housing will be affordable to a range of incomes, from families who earn 60 percent of the area median income to families with incomes above the area median income.  Housing will have one- to three-bedrooms and be offered in a variety of types, including single-family detached and attached homes, townhomes, live-work spaces, stacked flats, and loft condominiums.  The development will also feature public access courtyards, paseos, the Miller Slough riparian environment, open space, and bike/foot paths.

Construction of the Gilroy Cannery Project will take  more than four years and will be implemented in three phases, Forest Park, Alexander Place, and The Cannery. Forest Park, the first phase, will begin construction late in 2006. The final phase, The Cannery, will be completed early in 2010.  Commercial space will include the offices of South County Housing, with its 80-plus employees, and other tenants. A small amount of retail space will be available for resident-related uses that do not compete with businesses in the historic downtown core.
